Reverend Gary G. Chapman is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Ames Chapman of Wilberforce, Ohio. He attended Xenia High School and is a graduate of Central State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. While in college, Rev. Chapman was involved with the ROTC program and upon graduation, was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. He was promoted to First Lieutenant, Field Artillery Division, where he served admirably and was honorably discharged in 1992.
Rev. Chapman was installed as the 30th pastor of Zion Baptist Church, Xenia, Ohio on December 11, 1994. As the Undershepherd of his devoted congregation, his sermons are saturated with the word of God. Pastor Chapman’s ministry extends into the community where he served as an Intervention/Prevention Specialist for the Xenia Community Schools, providing insight and guidance for at-risk youth. In recent years, he has had the opportunity to work in the school system as a preferred guest teacher for Xenia’s school district. Pastor Chapman shared his knowledge of the game of basketball as he coached a winning season for the Beavercreek Stars Basketball program. Pastor Gary was making a difference by touching the lives of incarcerated men at the Monday Community Correctional Institution, but has since transitioned his gifts, expertise, and ministry as the operations manager at the Jeremiah Treehouse, a facility for men in recovery, located in Xenia.
Rev. Chapman is the 2nd Vice President for the Ministers and Deacons Institute for the Western Union Baptist District Association. He has also served as the President of the African American Ministerial Alliance of Greene County. Other areas of community service have included serving on the Board of Directors for the East End Community Organization, the Golden Age Senior Citizen Center, and Interfaith Hospitality Network. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Miami Valley Community Action Partnership. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Wilberforce Alumni Chapter.
Pastor Chapman was joined in matrimony with Miss Faith Wainwright of Louisville, Kentucky in June of 1997. They have three teenagers: Mahogany, Malachi, and Daniel. As an avid fisherman, Pastor Chapman not only has a strong love for God’s children, but a strong love for what God has put in the sea, namely fish! In addition to this past time, he enjoys boating and traveling, as well as being an enthusiastic fan of both high school and college basketball. Pastor Chapman is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Miami Valley Community Action Partnership and the serving as Operations Manager at the Jeremiah Tree in Xenia.
Pastor Chapman has a strong faith and belief that “With God all things are possible!” As the Undershepherd of Zion Baptist Church, he has tended to his flock and the church continues to grow in the word of God. With God’s help, he has had the courage to launch out into the deep. He has been rewarded with the “catch of many fish” –bringing those who seek to know and have a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. For as many days as there are stars in the sky, Pastor Chapman will continue to fulfill what God has asked each of us to do, “To go and tell of the life, death, resurrection, and salvation given to each of us through Jesus Christ.” To God be the glory, great things He hath done!
